BROOKE LEARY

Artist Statement
Before taking my first ceramics class freshman year, I had never considered myself artistic. However, since then I have explored a new side of myself that I had not known existed. Over these past years, this class has been the brightest part of my day. The stress of school and life once felt inescapable, however when I step into this room all my troubles melt away. Being able to use my hands and work with clay helps me release my tensions, as I am forced to slow down and focus on the balance of my work. In ceramics, I am constantly tasked with trying to overcome challenges, which has lead me becoming a much better problem-solver. It has even impacted me outside of this class, as I am not as afraid to make mistakes. Over these past three years, I have found a safe haven, where I can truly be myself.

I make art because it has helped me discover who I am, and each day I learn more about myself through the creative process. With each piece I make, I put in a personal element, so that the viewer can see me through my creations. The connection between me and my artwork is extremely important to me, so I strive to make pieces with meaning or emotion. Ceramics has sparked a passion in me that I hope to continue for as long as I can.
